Who Needs Release Dates Anyway?

OK ... so I was all excited about buying Destroyer's new record the day it came out (which was the day before yesterday). I've become exceptionally disciplined (and principled) about not seeking out albums that have "leaked," and instead getting really excited about actual release dates. It takes me back to when I was a teenager and downloading was not an option. The real thing that I'm afraid of, however, is that records will actually start coming out before they're actual done. Take this hypothetical scenario:
Thom Yorke and co. released their new album today ... but not exactly. It's only eight of the 11 songs, and 2 are unmastered and one is missing drum programming. You can download these eight for free and next week name your price for the additional three tracks, the drums, and the software to master the two unmastered ones yourselves.
It is a dark musical future we are looking at people!

It's not even that far out of the realm of reality. But DIY Radiohead is truly the stuff of nightmares.
