M.I.A. - "Paper Planes"

It was roughly a year ago when I picked up M.I.A.'s Kala and was instantly drawn to "Paper Planes." With its sampling of the Clash's "Straight to Hell," plus use of gun shots and a cash register in the chorus, the catchy-yet-avant-garde tune was my favorite song of last year. And it was a mini hit - bloggers loved it, not to mention everyone I talked to who had heard the album. A year later, thanks to its inclusion in the Pineapple Express trailer, the song has become a legitimate hit, ranking consistently in the top 5 song charts on iTunes, while also raising album sales. Even if it is just because of the trailer, I am glad this song is becoming the hit it should have been all along.
