American V: A Hundred Highways, the final record in the series of albums Johnny Cash recorded with Rick Rubin, will be released on July 3. Among covers of Bruce Springsteen and Hank Williams, it will feature the last song penned by Cash, "Like the 309." "These songs are Johnny's final statement," Rubin told Billboard. "They are the truest reflection of the music that was central to his life at the time. This is the music that Johnny wanted us to hear."
Cash's recordings with Rubin began in 1994 with American Recordings. A mix of new songs and brilliant covers, the four albums they made in Cash's lifetime are frequently cited for revitalizating his career. In 2003, the Unearthed box set collected four discs worth of tracks recorded with Rubin that had not yet been featured on an album. Of the new record, Rubin tells NME, "I think that American V may be my favorite of all of the albums in the American series. It's different from the others, it has a much different character. I think that this is as strong an album as Johnny ever made."

The man just keeps getting to be more and more legendary - and rightly so. From blue-haired grannies to blue-nailed kids, everybody respected Johhny.
I think it's so cool how Cash stays so relevant.
Whenever I hear "Ring of Fire," however, it makes me want to go out and buy some Preparation-H.
I just heard about this on the radio on my way home from work yesterday and I can't wait to hear it. The Man In Black is one of my all time heroes....add a dash of Rubin and you've got instant masterpieces.
I am excited about this. Not that I need more Cash for my collection - I'm still making my way through the box set.
I can't believe I didn't know there was still more material. I love Johnny Cash's old stuff and his Rubin produced comeback/ stripped down recordings, they are like two sides of a coin. Leave it to you to educate me musically.
