The LateNightTales series has been curated by the likes of Turin Brakes, the Flaming Lips, and Four Tet. Artists and producers are asked to compile a mix of their favorite songs, but Belle and Sebastian take it a step further, attempting to live up to the series' name and create the soundtrack for your 3 AM cab ride home. They accomplish this with an eclectic mix of horn-heavy, mostly mellow tracks that come from a variety of genres of decades. The frequent jazz and R&B selections may surprise some, expecting a heavy folk or indie pop set, but given the group's recent transformation, it seems to make sense. Johnny Cash, Stereolab, and RJD2 all coexist with Steve Miller, Donovan, Space Jam, and the Boston Baroque Orchestra. While the diversity is interesting, it feels a little bit like they chose overall eclectic obscurity over quality. I wouldn't recommend listening to it on your iPod, but throw it on at your next hip dinner party, and you'll seem like a pretty cool cat.
