Extince Collects the Best

I can't travel anywhere in the world without trying to pick up some new sounds. When Hillary and I were in Amsterdam in April 2003, no new discovery stuck out more than Dutch rapper Extince. Artist Merijn Bolink introduced me to Extince's debut Binnenlandse Funk and, though I do not speak the language, I'm told he's a "real wizard" with the words. Extince collects the best of his three albums, as well as some new remixes on De Avonturen Van De Exter-O-Naldus (streaming here). Originally rapping in English, Extince quickly switched to Dutch, becoming the first Dutch rapper to appear on the national charts. Among the highlights included on De Avonturen is a remix of my personal favorite, "Spraakwater," which, upon its release, inspired a spoof by Osdorp Posse called "Braakwater." Extince quickly retaliated with "Kaal of Kamen," another high point with its old school hip hop beat. No stranger to "beef," Extince has also feuded with Dutch rapper/Nas collaborator Brainpower, who, according to 3 Voor 12, is not as clever with his disses as Extince.

Something about the term "dutch rapper" really just makes me laugh.

Well then maybe you should broaden your horizons, RC.

Well I liked it! I think Dutch is a great language for rap, being quite guttural. It's close enough to German that I almost think that I can understand what he is saying. The Dutch are totally hardcore anyway.

Will,
I always reserve judgement on foreign language music. Once or twice I've been caught out. I've found something I like, only to find that the lyrics are either banal or obscene to the extreme.

I agree with you Ben - that has happened to me as well. Since one of Hillary's Dutch friends reccomended it to me, I imagine it's not too hardcore.

Barbara - so glad you liked it. I think it's cool, and there's virtually no info on him available in English.
