Beatlemania!

While I try and discover new music on a daily basis, I always find myself returning to Blur, the Byrds, Radiohead and, of course, the Beatles. Last night, Hillary and I watched Yellow Submarine, which I loved so much as a child. It's interesting how it only seems really weird (and a bit drugged out) when you're older. Also, when you're a kid, it makes more sense that they just randomly burst into song. This was the first time I got to see the performance of "Hey Bulldog," since that scene was left off the American release until the DVD. There's a George Harrison song at the end of the film called "It's All Too Much," and you could release that song today and it would totally pass for indie pop - and that one was a throwaway. I am super excited to start Bob Spitz' The Beatles: The Biography which is sitting on my bookshelf, and I may even watch the ten hour Beatles Anthology which I have not seen in several years. By coincidence, Ben Heller added Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band to The Ultimate Record Collection today.

I never, ever forget that they are my second favourite band of all time. And it's funny because like you, I wasn't around at the time they were famous (well I was, but I was only a tiny boy). It just shows how important they are, that people who weren't even born count them as their favourite band. It's down to the songs Will, the songs.
Thanks for the link.

Wasn't that a sweet treat? Will surprised me with delicious dinner and some great psychadelic Beatles action.

I was somewhat deprived of good music as a kid because I have parents who are not very into music (with the exception of my mom's love for Joni Mitchell that I share today). Thus I have some major gaps in my rock history knowledge and hadn't seen any Beatles movies. I don't think my dad even approves of popular music. Poor me, right?

Will - "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" will be a critical list album soon. And certainly "Parklife" and maybe even "Modern Life Is Rubbish".

All fantastic albums. The Byrds have a few albums I think could make the "critical list," though later in their career, they have amazing songs from ok albums. As far as Blur goes, Think Tank is probably my favorite behind Parklife.

I'm afraid I have to agree with whomever said that the Beatles are dying in order of coolness. Poor Ringo is next.

I received my first Beatles album as a birthday present when I was 5 years old. I played it until the vinyl got so worn out that I had to start putting pennies on the arm to hold it down to the record. Yes, I'm old. I owned Meet the Beatles on vinyl and had my own record player.

I've passed the Beatles love onto my teenaged son. Did you see the photo on my blog of his wall of album covers? Mostly Beatles albums. Now that I think of it, I better find out what he did with all the vinyl.
