Free Show at the Uptown Tomorrow:
Grand Lake, Man/Miracle

The Uptown in Oakland continues its great series of free "First Friday" shows with another excellent and eclectic bill that features a pair of our local favorites - Grand Lake and Man/Miracle, as well as No's from Oakland and Whispertown 2000 from LA.

I have really been liking what I've heard from Grand Lake - who are lead by former Port O'Brien bassist Caleb Nichols and sound a bit like a less epic Arcade Fire. I have seen Man/Miracle once before and the band delivers a fun, energetic set. I am excited to check out No's and Whispertown 2000, whose work I don't know quite as well.

The Bay Bridged
Celebrate Third Birthday at Rickshaw

Our good friends at The Bay Bridged will be celebrating their third birthday with a top-notch bill at the Rickshaw Stop tomorrow that features our pals Geographer, as well as the fabulous Heavenly States and Birds and Batteries. To top it off, DJ Elise of Indie Pop Rocks will be spinning tunes.

In case you didn't know, the Bay Bridged is the source for what is happening in the Bay Area music scene - through their daily news, weekly podcasts, and monthly shows. I've been known to contribute an article or two on occasion. And while we're speaking of the Bay Bridged, I should let you know that they will be "taking over" South by Southwest (quite literally) with their recently announced day party.

Benefit For The Prids
at Spaceland (LA) Tonight

This post was originally simply to promote the Shiloe/Prids/Babyland show at Spaceland tomorrow night. However, yesterday I received this email from Shiloe frontman Ken Ramos:
The Prids were set to play with us tomorrow night at Spaceland, but they were in a severe car accident last night which resulted in hospitalization for everyone on board. David was airlifted from the scene of the crash, he suffered a broken collar bone, broken ribs and has 6 staples in his head. He is still in the hospital. Everyone else has now been released from the hospital, but there are many injuries including broken bones. Our good friend Chris (from the L.A. band We Miss The Earth) was riding with them, and has suffered a broken arm, and may have spinal injuries.

As you can imagine, this is all very expensive, and we are making tomorrow's show a benefit for them. Please come out and support a great band in need.
If you are in the area, please go out and show your support. There is also a Paypal link for donations via The Prids' MySpace page.

Tomorrow Night:
The Passionistas and Pansy Division

As you know, I am not feeling well today. So, guaranteed, when I get home I am going to crash on the couch with Inland Empire. Tomorrow night, however, I will be out at the event that is not to be missed - The Passionistas at the Eagle Tavern with Boats!, Brilliant Colors and, oh, Pansy Division. You know, that Pansy Division that kinda founded the queercore movement, toured with Green Day, and appeared on the Angus soundtrack. This is pretty exciting.

Performer Review, Performer Presents! Show

A review of God's Boat can be found in the latest issue of Performer magazine - the West Coast version. So, if you live on the West Coast, you can probably find the magazine at one of your local establishments. If you do not, however, you can read it online. It's quite a nice review with several quoteworthy moments - "a true DIY spirit [channeled] through jaunty, three-chorded noise pop," "tunes with a timeless appeal," "genre-bending," not to mention: "The most redeeming qualities on the album, however, are the hidden ones: above every blithe pop hook looms a fuzzy bass line meandering lazily; behind a jagged rocking number awaits a grating squall of razor-wire feedback."On the subject of Performer, the Passionistas will in fact be headlining the magazine's August showcase alongside the Happy Hollows and the Dont's. I get excited for every show, but I am really, really excited about this show. I've raved about the Happy Hollows (from LA) before and I am just thrilled that they will be playing with us. Their debut EP is phenomenal and the live show appears to be where it's at. We've also been wanting to play with locals the Dont's for some time now. In fact, we were set to play the Hemlock with them a few months back, until an opening slot for Ted Leo opened up - lucky blokes. Anyhow, it's still a month away, but should be a blast. Not to mention it's at the Make Out Room and will probably be the venue's last Thursday night show.

Live in SF This Thursday

The Passionistas open up a pretty rad bill this Thursday at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, in support of the Herms and the May Fire. The Herms will be celebrating the release of frontman Matt Lutz's solo debut - the phenomenal Seesaw. It's $8, starts at 9, and says 21+ but I think they'll be letting in the underaged.

Bottom of the Hill Next Week w/ the Herms, May Fire

Next Thursday, the Passionistas open a pretty fantastic bill at Bottom of the Hill, alongside local favorites the Herms and the May Fire. The show will commemorate the release of Herms' fromtman Matt Lutz's solo debut, Seesaw (pictured to your left). Lutz is featured on this week's episode of The Bay Bridged, discussing his future plans while playing selections from the album. Seesaw can be sampled and purchased at CDBaby. Also worth mentioning: The May Fire are "Band of Month" for July at the Deli SF, and are featured in a two part interview.
