Film documents Massacre, Human Rights Abuses in Guatemala

My dear friend Filiberto Nolasco recently completed a documentary entitled The Massacre at Nueva Linda. The documentary focuses on the squatter community of Nueva Linda, in Guatemala. Nolasco says, "The community was protesting the kidnapping of their leader Hector Reyes and were violently evicted/massacred by the Guatemalan government in August 2004. The film also pays special attention to the emerging role of the army in police operations, echoing past human rights abuses." The project began when Nolasco was in Guatemala as part of his Watson Scholarship in 2004, and he returned last year to complete the film. What follows is a ten minute version. Note: Some of the images are graphic, but also effective in a reminder of the human rights abuses that occur daily without much attention. For more information, visit Nolasco's blog - On Latin America.

Sounds fascinating and informative. I'll have to check it out when I get home.
