Seeing the Music Lovers at Rickshaw

Aaron and I caught the Music Lovers set at Rickshaw Stop last night. Having not seen the Music Lovers since our Sacramento adventure, I was eager to catch the band live again, not to mention chat them up a bit. I showed up around 10:30, and was pleasantly surprised to find the Awkward Stage playing. I'd previously heard them from our blog friend Allison, and was quite pleased with the indie pop emanating from the six piece band. "Heaven is For Easy Girls" - the title track from their debut - was a definite high point. The band's drummer you may know from one of my personal favorites - the New Pornographers, bringing my New Pornographer-related concert experience total to four.

The 'Lovers took the stage around 11, with a slightly different lineup than what I'm used to. Playing as a quartet - with no lead guitar or violin - the sound was a bit more stripped down, but still sounded absolutely fantastic. In fact, it may have been my favorite of the four Music Lovers shows I've seen. I didn't know about half the songs - which was a pleasant surprise - and there was a bit of a "film noir" vibe to most of them.

Earlier in the evening, I edited the video we'd shot on Wednesday night ... probably get that posted beginning of next week or so and that will at least hint at a new direction in some of our future plans.

Tomorrow night, 8 San Francisco music bloggers (myself included) will be attending the Giants/Marlins game. I will be joined by Adrian from ipickmynose (who put the whole thing together), as well as reps from The Bay Bridged, the Deli SF, and HearYa. Should be a good time, and I'm hoping this becomes sort of a monthly thing.

Music bloggers meeting at a baseball game! There is something rather surreal about the whole image. Will you be wearing matching tees?

Sounds like a great concert. The Awkward Stage are great. Did you know that Shane Nelkin works in a crematorium by day?

Hey! I was there...I would have said hi had I known what you looked like at the time. :) The Awkward Stage are friends of friends, and I thought they were great. Those crazy Canadians.

Thanks Barbara - I did not know he works at a crematorium by day. Makes him all the more interesting. Matching tees sounds like a really good idea.

Well, Emily, I imagine our paths will cross at some point again at a show. I thought The Awkward Stage sounded quite good indeed. The sound is always great at Rickshaw, enhancing the lovely power pop melodies. I'm a bit of a sucker for anything New Pornographers-related.
