I love Christmas

I am not a religious man, but I do love Christmastime - or simply, the month of December. I love the feeling in the air - and Peppermint Mochas from Starbucks. I love putting on a heavy black coat and a scarf. Alas, this year, I have had a lot of trouble getting full-on into the holiday spirit. I guess I had a lot of time on my hands last year to be all up in the spirit, whereas time is just a little bit harder to find these days. Nonetheless, I need to do some decoration shopping - I love the whole aesthetic of Christmas. I love the green, red and white colors everywhere. I love Christmas lights - especially on Christmas trees. I love tacky Christmas stuff like big santas and snowmen - as long as you have that shit down by the first.

Anyhow, I've been meaning to a series of Holiday posts - like, the "Worst Christmas Song Ever," a review of Sufjan Stevens' holiday box set, and a breakdown of my favorite holiday songs. In the meantime, head over to Rewriteable Content for their 2006 Christmas mix, featuring Sufjan, the Raveonettes, Kurtis Blow and more.

I love going out walking, or taking a car ride to see all the lights. But I agree, everything must be down a week after new years (gotta give a little time).

I sheepishly have to admit, I like Sufjan's "C'Mon, Let's Boogie To The Elf Dance"

And btw, I agree. I like tacky Christmas stuff too. Christmas has gotten too designer lately. Fingers are probably pointing to Martha Stewart, but since it's Christmas I'll lay off.

Just you wait! It looks like someone vomited Christmas all over my apartment. You and Hill are in for a treat on the 16th.

Yay for a boy that likes Christmas!! I totally agree with you, the tackier the better. My heart goes all funny when I see the first few lights, or anything red and green. Sigh. I think in the future I'll be one of those crazy old women that has Christmas stuff up all year round :{

I have to admit I love seeing the lights, and I love bringing nice green smelly things into the house, but like you I just seem to have no time this year, so while we are going to get our tree tomorrow and decorate it on Sunday, it feels like just another chore on the to-do list. I hate that feeling! Somebody slap that grinch out of me.

I don't mind decorations staying up till the middle of January, because in western Canada there are a lot of people who celebrate the Eastern Orthodox Christmas (January 7), so I'm used to seeing stuff around a bit longer.

Growing up, I was taught to put hay on the window sill to feed The Wise Men's camels. Their owners came on January 6 and left you one gift each. Later, my allegiance shifted to Santa Claus and was shattered in 3rd grade by a condescending older woman (5th grader). Eventually, I even read Ferlinghetti.

These days, I put my faith in changing leaves and a crisp bite in the air. Christmas is a visual, sensory treat, especially if you like glitz. Glam on!

Thanks for the reminder...and the great link.
