N&UR Video Podcast No. 9: Frank Chu

This week's episode features one of San Francisco's most prominent figures. While I was filming Matt Lutz (for episode 8) at the 12 Galaxies (a nightclub named in Frank Chu's honor), Chu approached me asking if I wanted to interview him. I'd actually been wanting to interview Chu for some time so the timing was perfect. If you live in San Francisco, chances are you see Chu on a regular basis, as the man is extremely dedicated to his cause. For the past several years, Chu has been protesting seven days a week, mostly spending his time in downtown San Francisco. However, Chu could also be seen outside the courthouse during the Scott Peterson trial, while his trademark sign has been known to pop up at various political rallys and local events. His presence has not only made him a local institution, but has also garnered national attention, as Chu is quick to point out. In this episode, Chu explains his cause; Lutz also drops by to perform "Stay On", while you can also hear Dengue Fever's "Lake Dalores" in the background. Incidentally, Chu has one of the largest Wikipedia entries I've ever seen - check it out.

I saw him when I was in San Francisco two summers ago!!! He was by Fisherman's Wharf. Now I know what story behind the sign. I wonder how he supports himself financially?

I know this was a more factual piece, hence your VO in the intro, but I really think that was on of the things that was missing in the other pieces. I liked the connection it created. I'd have to go back and re-watch the other ones, but I'm sure you introduced them, via band members speaking, or song, trying to be objective, as a good filmmaker does. I think its partly because we're so used to hearing how VO is a crux, but you pulled it off here. Well done!

Allison - thanks for the comments. I'm glad you liked the narration. I guess I hadn't seen a need for it before + I am a tad self conscious about the sound of my voice on video - for a music-relate piece that is. I've also been planning to narrate the Twilight Singers episode.

He has advertising on the back of the sign, which runs about $150/week. He also gets complimentary drinks at the 12 Galaxies and I'm told complimentary food at others. It's cool you saw him at Fisherman's Wharf. You probably would see him at least once visiting the city.

It was driving me nuts not being able to stream this at work, but I finally got to see it. Fascinating! I love this dude! What a character and what a talker.

You've already answered my question that I had about how he supports himself, and I completely concur about the voice over. It really filled in the missing bits and I think was very effective in this video.

This was great!
