The Bad Movie Club held its first official meeting last night at the N&UR office to celebrate the fine work of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Given his recent succesful re-election bid for governor of California, overdosing on some of his best acting seemed like a great idea. On the agenda: Batman & Robin (1997) and The Sixth Day (2001). I've blogged about the genuis of Batman & Robin before - which holds the distinction of being the most fluorescent film in the Batman franchise, in addition to featuring amazing Arnold "freeze-inspired" one-liners like, "You're not sending ME to the COOLER," "I'm afraid my condition has left me cold to your pleas of mercy," Tonight, hell freezes over!" and "Prepare for a bitter harvest. Winter has come at last." The Sixth Day was a new one for us but did not disappoint. It takes place in "the future" and you know this because in the future there will be hologram infomercials talking about all the wonders of "the future." For some inexplicable reason, there was a lot about the XFL in this film. You know - the Xtreme Football League - the WWE-inspired football league that lasted a whopping one season. I guess writers Cormac and Marianne Wibberly were optimistic about the league's chances in "the future." Anyhow, Arnold plays a pilot who hangs out a lot with Michael Rapaport and I was trying to figure out if I could picture the two being buddies in real life:Michael: Yo Arnold, I don't know what's up with my wife. She's only giving it up like three times a week, and being a man, I need more than that.
Arnold: Maria and I stopped having sex a long time ago, so I just follow women into the bathroom and grope them.
Michael: Already tried that, but that's not how it's done in New York. That's where I'm from - New York - see the Yankee hat.
Ok, so Arnold gets cloned (which is illegal in this film) and he has to track down the scientists who cloned him and later he even teams up with his clone. I know you're thinking, "this sounds awesome" - and it is ... it really is. Plus, there's an evil scientist named Drucker, which lead to lots of awesome one-liners from the club: "What the druck," "Druck You!" "Mother Drucker." Oh, and Robert Duval is in this movie too - clearly his best work since Deep Impact.
I've never cared much for MadTV, but this sketch which pokes fun at The Sixth Day is pretty good...

Ah you should live closer! That sounds like such fun! It is an awful movie. Batman & Robin is the 2nd worst thing I've ever seen. Dungeons & Dragons is HANDS DOWN THE WORST.
I don't think I've ever seen any of his 'work' besides Twins, and Batman and Robin. The latter I try to erase from my memory.
I like the idea of a 'bad movie' night.
Hey we've been having bad movie night at our place most weekends for years now, but have just never realised it.
It is a lot more fun when you purposefully chose a crap movie (which we actually do as well). Do you guys have a secret handshake or anything in your club? Because that would be uber-cool.
secret handshake sounds like a good idea.
You should have badges and membership cards! I want to come! The script is possibly my favourite thing about Batman and Robin. Brilliant.
