Bluegrass Fest in San Francisco

Earlier this afternoon, Hillary and I decided to take advantage of a little festival that was happening just down the street. The occasion was the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, which has been going on since Friday with acts such as Billy Bragg, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Richard Thompson. Now the scene was pretty mobbed, but thanks to some special passes courtesy of my uncle, we managed to get a perfect spot for Elvis Costello and T. Bone Burnett - who were performing as the Coward Brothers. They sang a number of classic tunes, but really got the crowd moving with "If You're Going to San Francisco" and a rollicking take on the Byrds' "So You Wanna Be a Rock 'n Roll Star." Emmylou Harris came out - introduced as Emmylou Coward, their "long lost sister" - and harmonized with Costello on "The Scarlet Tide." Things were getting hectic so we thought it best to head home after that, but truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see one of my heroes up close, just kicking back and having fun.

What an amazing show that must have been! I love Emmlylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, Richard Thompson. It sounds like the musicians were having a lot of fun with their collaborations and new personas. And all that happening just down the street from you!

Wow, that sounds truly amazing. All those acts in one afternoon, and as Barb said, just across the street!

I'd have like to have been there. No wonder you're musically refreshed. Beats looking out at the rain, which I was doing yesterday.
