The Worst Graduation Song Ever

The time has come ... the high school year is coming to a close, meaning those two acts of forced sentimentality (the prom and graduation) are being celebrated on television, film and, unfortunately, in song.

Just this morning, I saw a video for the rather dreadful "Graduation Day," by Head Automatica. It was a bit of a faux-outcast high school anthem and while I did not like it, it is a bit young to be crowned this award.

Last week, Bill Lamb counted down the "Top Ten Graduation Songs" at About.com. Frankly, none of them stirred up good memories. The list was plagued with predictable mush like Vitamin C's "Graduation" and Green Day's "Good Riddance," but it takes something really special to be the "worst ever." Of Eve 6's "Here's to the Night," Lamb writes, "This lush, wistful ballad will leave many graduates misty-eyed thinking of the memorable moments of the years shared with their friends." Obviously Lamb never listened to the song. First the lyrics get philosophical, "So denied so I lied are you/ the now or never kind/ In a day and a day love/ I'm gonna be gone for good again." But then they just get downright raunchy - "Are you willing to be had/ are you cool with just tonight," and it is pretty clear that this song is about a dude trying to convince a girl to have sex with him simply because she may never see him again. As if to be like, "You fellas know what I'm talking about," the verse ends, "Here's a toast to all those who hear me all too well." Ok, asshole, don't try and rope me in to your cheesy pickup lines. Then there's a ridiculous chorus about feeling "alive," topped off with a string section that sounds straight off of a casio keyboard. What ever happened to these guys anyway?

BTW - N&UR's Charlie graduates next week and I couldn't be more proud.

Who's the dude on the left...their dad?

"Which one doesn't belong..." lalala...

Actually none of them do.

What a piece of crap. Makes Vitamin C go up ten notches in my estimation, to notch 1.
I may need to blog about this. This time of year always fills me with terrible anxiety about missing all those cliche experiences- which I am not sure ever really existed in Canada the way they are portrayed in American film and TV.

That was so beautiful and poignant. Doesn't it make you want to boff somebody because it's grad?

And congratulations to Charlie! May his future be bright!

I think I'm vitamin C deficient anyway.

But that Eve 6 song always got on my nerves. The guy singing sounds like he's got something shoved up his @$$.
