Thomas Dolby Wags His Finger at Kevin Federline

Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" (video) is a new wave staple. So he wasn't about to go and let K-Fed steal his beat. If you go to Kevin Federline's MySpace page, you can download his new single, "America's Most Hated." The song samples Mobb Deep's "Got It Twisted" which samples "She Blinded Me With Science" - and Dolby has not seen any checks come his way. "I considered turning a blind eye to it other than, as I mentioned on my site, asking him politely to take it down," Dolby tells MTV. "But I found out today that it aired on VH1 last week. So it's more than just an MP3 download. It's airing on TV, and there's no question it's taken from the Mobb Deep record. It's like what Vanilla Ice did with 'Ice Ice Baby' [illegally sampling Queen and David Bowie's 'Under Pressure'], although I think Vanilla Ice is a superstar compared to this guy."

Dolby adds: "I wouldn't have turned it down because of who he is. I knew nothing about him, quite frankly, and just because he gets a bad rap in the press doesn't make him a bad guy. But just on the merits of the song, I would have said no. ... The lyrics are pretty evil, and I just don't think it was appropriate."

I read about this in the news a couple weeks ago. Why don't people understand that if you sample another artists work, you need to step up and pay for it? And acknowledge it. I hope that they can resolve this either by K-Fed paying Dolby for the sample's use or by K-Fed making that particular song totally unavailable. Would he want someone sampling his wife's music without paying? It might cut into his easy life.

I LOOOOOOOOVE (that's a long ABBA O) that you wrote about this. I love that Thomas Dolby came out of hiding for this. It's awesome. He still rocks.

This is a tough one for me, because I do believe that sampling/ collage art can be amazing. In some cases, copyright law just gets in the way of artistic freedom. I think there are experimental filmmakers and DJ's who are doing amazing work that is only seen/heard in small numbers because of the legal ramifications of their work. On the flipside, the K-Fed song is garbage ... and Dolby (who wrote a significantly better song) does have some right to say, "don't mess with my work."

At least Vanilla Ice had a hit.

Dolby's song is my inspiration, as you know. And nobody, not K-Fed - not anybody - messes with Mr. Dolby, son of the great Dolby company that makes my sounds system go BOOM.

He should have sampled Mr. Dolby's hit single "Windpower" because as we know Mr Federline is an inconsequential bag of wind.

hilarious comment, ben!

I do and have always loved Thomas Dolby. His albums merit a deeper dig - lots of my perennial favorites. How dare K-Fed rip him off, and good for Thomas Dolby for not allowing it!
