Review: Without Feathers / The Stills

The Stills' 2003 debut, Logic Will Break Your Heart was dark, atmospheric and lovely, with virtually every song a gem waiting to be discovered. As single and opener "In the Beginning" hinted at, the atmosphere music has been toned down in favor of subtle alt-country. Lyrically, the band hasn't changed and musically they still sound lovely. I have few complaints about With Feathers other than the fact that it rarely goes beyond simply being pleasant. It was not until towards the end that songs managed to seriously distinguish themselves from one another. "Baby Blues" is a fantastic, upbeat indiepop number that contains arguably the best set of lyrics this year ("I'm into looks/but I'm also into books") and is followed by the gorgeous "The House We Live In." Had more songs followed the same path - referencing Logic while not mimicking it - Without Feathers would be a worthy follow-up. Instead, it sounds more like a band in transition. Regardless, I will still follow wherever they take me.

3.5 (out of 5)

I've been hearing varied reviews of this album, albeit mostly positive. I'll have to have a listen myself because now I am intrigued.

I was obsessed with their first album and I have to say I am very let down by this one. It is not offensive but it is just sort of boring- background music. I will still get their next album and just hope it is a sophomore slump!
