I have recently come to the conclusion that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are madly in love. I realize that this may not be the popular opinion, but seems correct if you look at it with common sense. When Tom and Katie first got together last year, we all assumed it was a disgustingly shameless publicity stunt to extend the longevity of Tom's career (and promote War of the Worlds as well). It seems rather clear, however, that based on M:I:III's dismal second week gross, Tom's relationship with Katie, the pregnancy, and their awkward public appearances, are in fact dreadfully bad for his career. Despite this, Tom remains committed to Katie and the baby and, thus, it must be true love. Decades from now, historians will look at Cruise - because decades from now, pop culture will be our only real history - and critique his significant role in the downfall of American society. One need only watch an interview with Cruise - his cocky, can-do-anything attitude sickeningly complimented by starstruck reporters - to see that the man is insanely narcissistic and rather lacking in self-awareness. Cruise is not young, nor particularly handsome, but that hasn't stopped him from believing himself to be the ultimate action star and the ultimate sex symbol. The Mission:Impossible series is especially interesting. Based on a series that was all about "the team," the series has instead become a vehicle for Cruise to display just how much abuse his body can endure. Rumors about Cruise's sexuality are rather common, but frankly it's hard for me to see the man loving anyone but himself - Holmes even looks a bit like him.
Up till now, Cruise's narcissism has been validated by those around him and his box office numbers. Yet with his current semi-flop, the Cruise bubble has burst ever so slightly. It's not quite equivalent to the Iraq war, but it does pull back the curtain and reveal a faulty system. Cruise's downfall, much like that of the United States, will be a failure to realize that - at a certain point - people stop buying your ideology, and start looking at your actions through a critical lens.::1 Related Link::

Did you happen to see the season finale of Law & Order SVU last night? There was a character that was a thinly veiled version of Tom Cruise. You know how that show is... "ripped from the headlines" and all that. The shows other characters really ripped into this faux-Cruise guy. He deserved it, too.
Interesting point, well argued. A good read. With all the celebrity and blog bile I read out there (not here, obv.) it sometimes goes too far into fantasy/spite. i.e. Katie's stretch mark pics that people are saying aren't stretch marks...makes me say whoa! which is much like what I said about Tommy's dance.
As you say, pop culture history will tell. I am not into outing celebs, but what intrigues me is the notion that anyone might engage in 1940's style intrigue and weird deals today, an idea which I kind of love.
Pretty soon Hugo Chavez will be calling him a donkey as well.
