How did you feel last year when you found out Jack White was writing a song for Coke? "I certainly wouldn't want a song that I'd already written to be used on a commercial," he said. "That seems strange. But to be asked to write something particular along one theme of love in a worldwide form that I'm not really used to appealed to me. I've written a song and I wrote it really quickly and it's an interesting commercial that's been made. I was inspired by the commercial." How do you feel about it now? Better yet, how does Neil Young feel?

i wonder if neil young will give jack a public diss because of this.
i dunno. i think jack's a damn genius, but i don't like my favorite geniuses doing commericals for multi-gazillion $$$ corporations, either.
money talks, i guess...
It looks like a Gondry video- tell me he didn't direct it!
I hate to admit it but I like the song and commercial. It is kind of gross but then again it infuses a little artistry into a mundane aspect of everyday life (at least for those of us who watch TV and commercials).
oh yeah, i totally agree that the commercial is visually really cool (plus that red hair color rocks), the song is sweet & super-catchy, and it will stand out among all the standard goop that tv feeds us every day. i don't want to sound like i think i'm oozing with all this indie credibility or anything like that...i get that it goes with the whole red and white thing, jack actually drinks a lot of coke in real life, so he felt happy about doing the song. i just didn't think he, of all people, would be into such a thing. oh well!
it DOES have that gondry-feel to it, the continuous fluid trippy look.
p.s. i just discovered your blog today, it's wonderful! :)
Thanks, mondo, glad you like the blog. I think commercials are often a great venue for avant garde/experimental filmmakers, so I'm pretty supportive of the ad. And I already drink a lot of coke .... I like this a lot more than there "Make it Real" campaign of 2003.
I'm a little conflicted, perhaps because I don't know the whole story yet. Was he approached by Coke? Will this song be used only as a commercial, or will he be putting this on an album as well?
There's nothing wrong with writing a commercial jingle, I guess. People do that all the time. But I do have some issues with then using that material and releasing it on an album. Sort of like double-dipping.
It's hard to hate anything they do, and I guess it's less heinous than actually pimping one of their songs. Neil Young is a dying breed unfortunately. I guess I would like to know how rich they are now/ how much they made / why...
