The Post-Oscar Blues

Nobody seemed more excited by their Oscar win than Three 6 Mafia. That was also probably the biggest surprise of the night.

This year's Oscars were sure to be better than previous years, thanks in part to a better crop of nominees and the best host imaginable. Jon Stewart's jokes were striking out at first, but then he hit his stride - some hilarious "campaign ads," and a montage of homosexual tension from cowboy films of the past (certainly the best of the many montages we saw that night). The night's funniest moment, however, belonged to the slow-motion interpretive dancing that took place during the performance for the nominated song from Crash. Dolly Parton was really robbed of the Best Song award, but she gave an awesome performance that needed no interpretive dancing.

My favorite speeches of the night came from Reese Witherspoon and Ang Lee, but by and large I was waiting for winners to get off the stage. Thankfully everyone kept it pretty short, but I don't know why they cut off the Best Picture Winners. Speaking of which, I can't say I'm at all happy with Crash's victory, and how many times can you say, "It's a film about tolerance." There was a lot of back-patting this year about the "bravery" of the "issue films," but um ... "Dear Hollywood and the Academy, you are still very white male, no matter how many times you cut to Jaime Foxx."

Oscars, I will see you next year.

I loved the campaign ads. My very favourite was "Judy Dench took out my eye in a bar fight". I've been saying that all day.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who found the dancing going on during In the Deep hilarious. I think it was supposed to have deep meaning, but I obviously missed it.

My favourite acceptance speech: the penguins!
