All too often, the terms "music fan" and "sports fan" are mutually exclusive, and members of each group try not to associate themselves with the other. Here at New and Used Records, we would like that to end. My brother and I have always been huge baseball fans, and we have dabbled in other sports as well. The sidebar reads, "where in the world is Charlie?" I can't account for all my lost time, but for the past few days I have been glued to the TV watching March Madness. For those who don't know, this is college basketball national championship tournament, where 64 teams are eventually narrowed down to one. For a couple weeks every year, Americans frantically fill out their brackets, trying to figure out which teams will surprise and which teams will crash and burn. This is the first year I've really gotten into the tournament, and I am hooked. I'll take a good college game over the NBA any day. The games are fast-paced and unpredictable. These guys really seem to be playing for something, contrary to many professional athletes who are only concerned with stats and shoe deals.My final 4 this year is Connecticut, Texas, Memphis, and Florida, with Connecticut beating Texas in the championship game. We've already seen some exciting upsets, and it's not too late to get into the tournament. In the future, I hope you'll see more of me, as N & UR continues to bridge the gap between indie music and sports.

I applaud you for diminishing the two solitudes between indie music and sports. I have to admit I'm not much of a basketball fan (although I do love a game of pickup in the driveway), being more drawn to those slower sports, like curling and baseball, where you can go into the kitchen for a while and still not miss anything. If I do need a quick-paced sport, however, I love lacrosse. (I hope your teams do well nonetheless).
I agree Will. I'm a fan of both music and sports, especially Cricket,Baseball, and Soccer (we call it Football).
The teams I follow....
Cricket - Warwickshire. They play in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Baseball - Philadelphia Phillies. Only one World Series win in 1980, but we all live in hope.
Soccer - West Bromwich Albion. The "Baggies" are in danger of relegation to lower league status. Fingers crossed they win a few before the end of the season.
And, it's the world cup in the summer. I'm REALLY looking forward to that.
Charlie - thanks for the blog ... Hope to see more posts from you. I think we have transcended the sports fan/music geek barrier fairly well (baseball is fairly indie rock).
Ben - hey, at least you've got a world series ... my SF Giants never have ... nearly did a few years back (broke my poor heart).
Not a fan of American football ... I enjoy the world cup of what they call football everywhere else.

I am not very interested in sports at all but Will and Charlie have gradually pulled me into the Giants thing (a little bit) with their infectious enthusiasm and lack of jockiness.
I am still mad that my favorite players on the Giants are gone, though.
But the Giants still have some lovable ones - Randy Winn? Ray Durham? Pedro Feliz? Felipe and Moises? Noah Lowry - he seems like a nice guy.
Yeah yeah I like them enough. I still miss my little Marquis.
