New David Lynch Film Shrouded in Secrecy

Reading about Michel Gondry's two new films lead me to wonder what another one of my favorite filmmakers was up to. Well . . . David Lynch has been in Poland the past several months shooting Inland Empire on DV with a cast of his regulars - Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton and Laura Dern - as well as Jeremy Irons. Little is known about the plot other than that it concerns a woman in trouble. According to Theroux, this is also about as much as the actors know. "I couldn't possibly tell you what the film's about," he says. "It's become sort of a pastime - Laura and I sit around on set trying to figure out what's going on. . . . [Lynch is] just giving us scenes - and me, Laura, and Jeremy have to justify and make sense of whatever that is. Sometimes someone will show up on set you didn't even know was in the movie. Julia Ormond showed up two weeks ago and David hands me a scene where she's my wife! I'm like, I wish I'd known that! But in a weird way you're glad you didn't."



Inland Empire is rumored to be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
