For her side project with the Watson Twins, Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis returns to Omaha to work alongside Mike Mogis, M. Ward and Conor Oberst. The result - "Rabbit Fur Coat" - is a sparse, acoustic, country-tinged album that finds Lewis channeling Dusty Springfield and Emmylous Harris. For her cover of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle with Care," Lewis forms her own indie rock all-star group with Oberst, Ward, and Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard. On paper, all signs point to this being a top-notch cover, but something seems to have gone terribly wrong. Lewis sounds uneasy tackling George Harrison's verses, lacking the vocal confidence she normally brings. Gibbard seems bored as he phones in the Roy Orbison part. It is not until Oberst jumps in to sing the final verse that any trace of life is brought to the song. Let's hope the rest of the album - due January 24 - fares better.2 STARS (out of 5)
