The film concerns a young man who develops the ability to manipulate his dreams, only to get lost inside them, and is the first Gondry picture not from a Charlie Kaufman script. Cinematical's Karina Longworth writes that the film "is not particularly effective, story wise, and no, it doesn't match 'Eternal Sunshine' in terms of emotional resonance. But god, I loved it, so, so much. It will certainly frustrate those who want directors to essentially present them with neat little packages, fully contained narratives wrapped with perfect red bows. It's not an easy thing to comprehend, and it requires work, although like Gondry's last film, its convolutions would almost certainly benefit from repeat viewings." "...Sleep" was purchased for $6 million by Warner Independent Pictures, with a tentative mid-year release date scheduled.
March 3 will see the long-awaited Gondry documentary "Block Party" (view trailer) released to theaters. The film documents Dave Chapelle's 2004 secret block party in Brooklyn which featured performances by Kanye West, Common, Jill Scott, Dead Prez, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and, most notably, the reunited Fugees. (Gondry also designed the poster).Lastly, here is Gondry and fellow indie maverick Jim Jarmusch paying homage to the White Stripes:
